Medication management is using drugs to reduce the symptoms caused by an illness or disease. Psychiatric medications play a vital role in treating mental health conditions by easing the symptoms while participating in behavioral changes and/or psychotherapy.
The many types of psychiatric medications affect people in different ways. You might need to try various medications at different doses before finding the right drug at the right dose that provides the best relief from your symptoms with the fewest side effects.
Andrea understands how medications can help those struggling with mental illness. She uses evidence-based practices to determine what and if a medication could be helpful. She does not prescribe high doses of, or daily, benzodiazepines.
Andrea determines who needs medication management after completing a detailed psychiatric diagnostic evaluation. During this initial 50–60+ minute evaluation, she reviews your history and performs screening tests that help her diagnose your condition.
Andrea specializes in treating many mental health conditions, including:
You might need medication management if you have a mental health condition with moderate to severe symptoms. Andrea recommends combining medication management with behavioral changes and/or psychotherapy to get the most benefits.
Once Andrea determines your diagnosis, she will discuss the medications options available and together you will make a treatment plan. She starts out on a low dose and schedules frequent follow-up appointments to monitor your symptoms and the drug’s possible side effects. Follow-up appointments take about 20-25 minutes.
Andrea either increases your dose or changes your prescription based on how you feel. You continue to see Andrea until you reach your maintenance dose and continue on that dose for as long as necessary. Once you’re on your maintenance dose, follow-up appointments are less frequent.
You should never abruptly stop taking psychiatric medication because it can have devastating consequences, including withdrawal symptoms and a return of your symptoms. Andrea can help you wean off medications safely for the best outcomes.
Andrea also recommends that you see your primary care provider for wellness exams and lab work when participating in medication management.
Andrea only prescribes medications to pharmacies in Colorado.
