What is depression?

Depression is more than feeling sad or down and out. It’s a mental health condition that causes such intense feelings of sadness and hopelessness that it affects how you think and act.

Depression affects people of all ages and walks of life and can develop following a life crisis or trauma. In some cases, the cause of depression is unknown.

Though many people with depression feel helpless, it’s treatable. Andrea is a compassionate and experienced psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who provides treatment for people with depression through her telemedicine platform. Telemedicine gives her the ability to treat people from all over Colorado.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Depression affects everyone differently. However, the symptoms of depression affect your normal behaviors and routines.

The common symptoms of depression include:

  • Low mood
  • Lack of energy
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Changes in appetite
  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Disinterest in activities that bring joy
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Aches and pains from unknown causes
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

You don’t have to experience every symptom to have depression. However, for a depression diagnosis, you must have a generally low mood that lasts two or more weeks and affects your normal routine and behaviors.  Andrea treats all depressive types, including seasonal affective disorder.

What happens during a depression evaluation?

Andrea completes a psychiatric evaluation during your first telepsychiatry appointment. She reviews your medical and mental health histories and symptoms. She uses mental health screening tools that help her develop a diagnostic impression.  Together, she will work with you to develop the appropriate treatment plan.

Your initial telehealth evaluation with Andrea takes 50-60+ minutes.

Andrea might request that you schedule a wellness exam and lab work with your primary care provider. This is to rule out any medical causes that could otherwise explain your symptoms, examples include thyroid disorder, vitamin D deficiency, etc.

What are the treatments for depression?

Treatment for depression can include psychotherapy, medication management, or both. Andrea specializes in medication management and helps find the right antidepressant to ease your symptoms and improve your overall well-being.  She is not a Ketamine provider.

Andrea recommends participating in therapy when taking medication to treat depression. Psychotherapy is customized and often recommended to match your needs and goals.

Depression isn’t something you just snap out of. Let Andrea Skrocki help you get the compassionate care you need for your depressive symptoms right now.
